How am I going to play sports now? That is the question I was asking myself after my injury at 29 years old. After 26 years of being a recreational athlete, I was afraid of the answer.

There are so many articles and videos about wheelchair fitness that it can feel overwhelming. Where and how do I get started? How do I find the time? Getting started with wheelchair fitness can be daunting. But there is a secret.

Personally, I've never really liked just watching from afar, so I wheeled myself into the middle of the crowd. I had heard of people who had crowd surfed in wheelchairs before, so I figured I'd give it a shot. What was the worst that could happen? I could end up in a wheelchair?

In life, there are small obstacles and big obstacles that keep us from doing what we want to do. Most of the small ones can be beaten quickly and with little effort, while the bigger ones are intimidating and aren't so easy to figure out. I had to deal with one of the really big obstacles — becoming paralyzed from the waist-down.

Growing up I had a wonderful childhood. Every night I indulged in watching my mom cook meals for my dad, my sisters, and me. Watching Mom is where I found my passion for cooking. This however would prove to be quite the chore from a wheelchair.
